JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM” STAMPEDES INTO PH CINEMAS JUNE 6

 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Don’t look now, but Philippine moviegoers are in for special treat as Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdomopens in cinemas nationwide on June 6 — sixteen days earlier than most territories around the world, including North America.

This only demonstrates that the Philippines is a highly regarded market by Hollywood studios. In particular, the early bow of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in Manila is Universal Pictures’ way of thanking local fans for their overwhelming support for the first Jurassic World in 2015, one of the biggest-grossing films of all-time in Philippine history.

Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return alongside executive producers Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Pratt and Howard are joined by co-stars James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, while BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum reprise their roles.

It’s been three years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Pratt) and Claire (Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful franchises in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before. Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

While Jurassic World took the park that was only a promise and brought it to awe-striking, terrifying life, Trevorrow knew the next chapter could and should tackle much darker themes. “These dinosaurs were of this Earth 65 million years ago, and now they’re in a place that is completely foreign to them,” he says. “I thought there was a way we could tell a story that would identify the human angle. How would you feel if you were brought into a world that you didn’t belong to…just for the satisfaction of others? That was a realm we hadn’t gone to before, and it was something we knew these movies would benefit from.”

As the writing partners designed this second act, they strategized where they could take the audience. Through the greediness of investors playing God and park guests throwing caution and cash toward reason, Jurassic World had been unceremoniously obliterated. The writers knew there was fertile ground to explore off island, and they’d been quietly planting the seeds for years. “What would be the result of that destruction; what would be the step beyond it?” asks Trevorrow. “Fortunately, there were a lot of clues we planted in the first movie; in the film itself, on maps and on the website—in places people wouldn’t think to look for hints about the next two movies—there’s information embedded in all of them.”

GET TO KNOW THE CHARACTERS IN “SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY”

QiRa

Lucasfilm’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” which tells the origins of the legendary Han Solo is now playing in Philippine cinemas.  While Han is not only the title character but also the anchor of the film, it’s really the relationships that he forms over the course of his life that make him a well-rounded and interesting figure.

Below, let’s meet the colorful characters in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and get a glimpse of how they shaped Han’s destiny.

Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). For young Han Solo, times are tough under Imperial rule. He makes his way as a reckless street thief, working for a notorious gang on Corellia, which is headed up by an ill-tempered crime boss. After an arduous stint as an Imperial mudtrooper, Han calls it quits and finds that he is very comfortable reinventing himself and traveling in the company of scoundrels around the galaxy.

Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson).  There is no question that Beckett is a survivor. Seasoned, taciturn, and all-business, Beckett quietly works out all the angles to come out ahead. He’s put together a team of specialized thieves to carry out risky but profitable heists, which he carefully plans and executes.

Qi’Ra (Emilia Clarke).  Qi’ra is deeply enmeshed in a life of crime as a member of a street gang on Corellia. Street-smart, calculating and ambitious, she puts her early life as a powerless street urchin behind her and uses all her wits to move up in status within a prominent criminal organization.

Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).  Smooth, sophisticated Captain Lando Calrissian stands ready to retire from his life of a smuggler and become a full-time gambler. His calling is now to shuffle from one high-stakes card game to another across the galaxy as opportunities arise.

Val (Thandie Newton).  Val is a trusted member of Beckett’s crew. Cool, bad-ass, and self-assured, Val is a no-nonsense woman who can be prickly at times, to say the least. She is a crack shot with a blaster rifle but may just be the most level-headed and capable member of Beckett’s ragtag crew of scoundrels.

L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge).  L3-37 is Lando’s co-pilot and a self-made droid assembled from astromech and protocol parts. Despite her make-up, L3-37 is an enlightened navigator who cares deeply about droid rights.

Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany).  Dryden Vos heads up an emerging criminal syndicate. Under Vos’ leadership, the organization quickly gains a reputation for ruthlessness.  But as ruthless as Vos is, he is not a crude cutthroat, preferring instead to surround himself with luxury.

Chewbacca (Joonas Suotomo).  The mighty Wookiee is nearly two centuries old, but he has fallen on hard times during the age of the expanding Empire. When fate has Han and Chewbacca cross paths, Chewbacca embarks on a long, loyal and trusting friendship that he could have never expected.

KICK-ASS LADIES ROB THE MET GALA IN “OCEAN’S 8”

Ocean’s 8

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter team up in Warner Bros. Pictures’ new action adventure “Ocean’s 8” in Phiippine cinemas June 13.

It’s been more than 10 years since an Ocean-led crew has conned their way to millions of dollars.  Now a new gang is banding together to carry out the ultimate heist.  But this time, it’s Debbie Ocean (Bullock) masterminding the plan, and she’ll only require eight supremely skilled women to pull it off.

Director/screenwriter Gary Ross says, “The outlaw trope has always been at the heart of American movies, but with few exceptions, those ‘outlaws’ have been men.  I was intrigued with the idea of a group of kickass women laying claim to this genre that had always seemed off limits.  Plus, I love heist movies—always have.”

Sandra Bullock offers, “This is a heist movie, and heist movies are always fun.  How will they get away with whatever they are stealing and what antics will happen along the way?  But what this movie is really about is these eight wonderfully complex, smart, funny women, who are going to take you on their own journey, and all the twists and turns that arise.”

Bullock stars as Debbie Ocean, who has spent a little over five years devising an intricate plot to steal the Toussaint, Cartier’s one-of-a-kind diamond necklace, valued at 150 million dollars.  And she plans to do it in the midst of one of the most-watched events of the year: The Met Gala.

In the tradition of the “Ocean’s” films, each member of the team brings her own specialty to the table.  Ross offers, “I wasn’t just casting individual roles; I was putting together a band who all had to sound great together.  It was exciting from the beginning.”

The opportunity to work with one another became a major draw for the actresses.  Blanchett confirms, “When Gary and Steven started talking about the cast they were assembling, that was the absolute ‘why’ for me.  It really is an amazing group of women, and it was just great to play with them.”

Hathaway says, “Making a movie is a certain kind of shared experience, but when it’s you plus seven other women, there is so much more common ground to start with.  That created an effortlessness in working together that made it so much fun.”

“That spirit of collaboration extended throughout the entire production,” says Ross.  “On set, there was this alchemy taking place between these eight tremendously creative women.  Sometimes I would just take a step back and watch it all happen.”

“Ocean’s 8” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
